Tuesday July 12, 2005 Today started out a little rough for me. Rushing here in the rain with traffic build up had me worried I wasn’t going to get to see Zack before they started rounds at 7:00 AM. As I was rushing to get stuff out of my car I dropped my keys down the sewer grate. Now I would have to wait until 8:30 to get into the ICU. It was worth the wait to see Zack doing so well. His ICP was 4 and I even saw it drop to 3 and 2. His white blood count has dropped to 7 so still no infection. He is breathing over the ventilator a lot when people talk to him and his blood pressure goes up which indicates he is aware of things going on around him. When he is accessed he opens his eyes and quickly moves his arms to wear they pinch him. At times I am wiping tears away. He is doing very surprising good (well surprising for the doctors but we know that God has been in control of this from the beginning). At 6:30 PM my whole world changed. I was taking Andy Raines and Ann Swope up to see Zack when I saw the lights on in his room. There was a lot of excitement and his nurse Tom called me into the room to tell me he was giving the thumbs up. Before long the room was full with the entire nursing staff and Zack gave us quite a show. His eyes were open; he would show us his thumb, wiggle his toes and stick out his tongue all on command. It was the most exile rating moment and lots of tears. Scott had to run from the room he was so overwhelmed. Rita and other visitors were running in and the staff was gracious to allow many people to share our experience. We wore Zack out. Some prayers have been answered quietly and others God throws at us like thunder! Needless to say my emotional state was entirely different than when I arrived at the hospital early this morning. I was practically running down the halls when we left him. None of this would be possible without the prayers of so many people. The doctors here have been great but God has been in control of this from day one. I have never asked why this happened. I know why it happened…it was an answered prayer. For the last several years every morning in my prayers for my children I ask that they be caught in their disobedience so bad behavior can be corrected. I didn’t expect the discipline to be quite so harsh but only God knows how to get Zack’s attention. And he got not only Zack’s attention but also the attention of all his friends and the many other teenagers who have heard what happened. That is my new prayer. So watch out kids because GOD ANSWERS PRAYER!

Eileen,

Although I don't know you personally, I admire you for your strength. My daughter Taylor is a friend of Zach's and although this is such a heart wrenching thing to happen, I agree with your comments and maybe this will wake up our teens. God will only give us as much as we can handle and He is with us all the way. Be strong. I pray for your family.

Eileen, It is thursday morning and I just found out theu email about Zach. As i was reading your postings (bless you for having the courage and the faith to take the time to share with others)I discovered the latest update. It truly sounds like zach is on the upswing and I pray for you, scott and your family that this childs disobedience turns into a positive for all the people that it touches.
As a mother that loves her child dearly I can only imagine the pain this has brought you. Though I do know the strength that you have and the faith in god has brought you the positive signs that are happening to zach. My prayers are with you and your family. I would like to do something for you and your family so when the time is right please do not hesitate to ask. You are in my prayers.

Eileen~ Please know that our family has been praying for Zach, and all of your family....and the other kids/families involved in this awful accident. We know first hand the power of prayer and God's grace.

Thank you for having the website and having the strength to keep up with it. Just reading all the posts and then the comments, overwhelms me; knowing that God works miracles.

Hey Eileen,
I am a student at the University of South Carolina, and I hang out at the Shack. Garrett was gracious enough to let us know about what is going on. I want you to know that I am honored to join with you and hundreds of others in praying for your son. I know that God has His hand on Zach and will bring him to full recovery and restoration. After all, God is the ultimate physician and is soveriegn over all. Trust and believe, and have faith that the Lord will completely heal your son. He is delighting in the victory He is being given through your struggles. Draw near to Him and seek Him through it all. I pray that the Lord's glorious Spirit descends upon Zach, sustaining his health and providing what he needs. I exhort you for your courage and strength that you have as a gift from your Father in heaven. Continue to let His light shine brightly through you. Thank you for sharing with us. This will bring your family close through the love and unity of Christ as He lifts up Zach. My love and heart goes out to you and your family. Know that the Lord will be glorified, so continue to praise Him. Psalm 37:4

Dear hornbacks you are so lucky that your son is getting back to normal so quick. Prayer really works although in my past i wasnt as lucky my 3rd child Alexis who was a star of her own she had all the guys and alot of female friends. SHe had dirty blonde hair and eye as blue as the ocean every thing about her was beautiful! her voice her personalty she was so kind to her autistic brother zac. One day just like you i got the evil call that my poor baby alexis was in a serious car crash and that i imediatly should go to the hospital, i got there 3 hours after the call the anwsering machine picked up beacuse i couldnt hear the phone ring because my daughter turns the ringers of so we cant hear her boyfriend call at 2 in the morning. It was too late i didnt even get a chance to pray for alexis she died 5 minutes before i arrived in the emergency room.It was devastating you dont know me and its along story how i found out about Zack and this website but i give you all my prayer i still pray for my baby she wasnt the only one in the car her boyfriend Theadore (teddy) was driving i miss my baby and i am not surprised how good your son is doing i dont know him but what i hear he is a fighter.
lots of prayer from Diane
